Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : System temporarily unavailable

Instrument cluster warning indicators for the Nissan Leaf safety systems

Condition A

The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system in your Nissan Leaf may automatically deactivate, accompanied by a blinking warning light, when it encounters environmental factors that temporarily impair its ability to monitor the road. This occurs in the following situations:

  • The radar sensor detects electromagnetic interference from an external radar source.
  • The interior surface of the windshield camera area becomes misted or frozen.
  • Intense, direct sunlight or high-intensity light sources are shining directly into the front camera.
  • The vehicle cabin temperature exceeds approximately 104ºF (40ºC) due to prolonged exposure to direct, intense sunlight.
  • The area of the windshield glass monitored by the camera remains consistently obscured by dirt, road grime, or other debris.

Action to take

As soon as these environmental conditions improve or resolve—such as through cabin cooling or windshield clearing—the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system will automatically resume its normal functionality.

Note: If the windshield camera area is misted or frozen, it may take some time for the climate control system to clear it after the A/C is engaged. Should this area remain persistently obstructed by stubborn dirt, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for professional cleaning or inspection.

Condition B:

During periods of severe weather—including heavy rain, dense fog, or thick snow—the front radar sensor may become physically obstructed. In these instances, the Nissan Leaf safety system will automatically cancel the AEB with Pedestrian Detection function, sound an audible chime, and display the "Forward Driving Aids Temporarily Disabled Front Sensor Blocked See Owner's Manual" message in the vehicle information display.

Action to take:

Once the adverse weather conditions subside and the path is clear, the warning message will automatically disappear from the display. If the "Forward Driving Aids Temporarily Disabled Front Sensor Blocked See Owner's Manual" message persists even after the weather clears, please have the system inspected; it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

Condition C:

The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system will automatically deactivate if the radar sensor integrated into the front bumper is covered by mud, road grime, or physical debris. The vehicle will alert you via an audible chime and the "Forward Driving Aids Temporarily Disabled Front Sensor Blocked See Owner's Manual" warning message.

Action to take:

If this message appears, safely stop your Nissan Leaf in a secure location, engage the P (Park) position, and turn off the EV system. Carefully clean the sensor area on the front bumper to remove any obstructions, then restart the EV system to see if the system resets. If the warning message remains, the system requires professional diagnostics at a NISSAN dealer.

Condition D

When driving through environments with limited distinct visual or structural references—such as vast, featureless deserts, expansive snowfields, long bridges, or when driving parallel to exceptionally long, continuous walls—the system may struggle to maintain a reference point. This can result in the illumination of the system warning light and the appearance of the "Forward Driving Aids Temporarily Disabled Front Sensor Blocked See Owner's Manual" message.

Action to take:

Once you have exited these unique driving conditions and returned to standard road environments, manually turn the system back on to restore full functionality.

Note: Please be aware that if the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system stops working, the Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW) system will also cease operation as they share sensor data.
