Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Steering Assist limitations

WARNING

  • In the following situations, the front-facing camera may fail to identify lane markers accurately or misinterpret road features, which may result in the Steering Assist system failing to operate as intended:
    • When navigating roads with confusing, multiple, or parallel lane markings, as well as areas where markers are faded, poorly painted, non-standard, or obscured by environmental debris such as water, dirt, or snow.
    • When driving on road segments where lane markers are discontinuous or completely missing.
    • When the traveling lane undergoes sudden changes in width, such as merging or tapering sections.
    • When driving through active road construction zones where multiple, conflicting, or temporary lane markings create visual confusion.
    • When the camera encounters high-contrast visual interference—such as deep shadows, significant tire ruts, road seam repairs, or leftover painted lines—which the system may mistakenly identify as active lane markers.
    • When driving through complex junctions where your lane merges with or separates from other traffic flows.
  • To prevent a potential loss of vehicular control and mitigate the risk of an accident, do not engage the Steering Assist under the following conditions, as the system will likely be unable to detect lane markers reliably:
    • During inclement weather, including heavy rain, thick fog, snowstorms, or dust storms.
    • When road spray, mud, or slush is being kicked up by the tires of leading or oncoming vehicles, obstructing the camera's view.
    • If the camera lens area is compromised by the adhesion of dirt, road oil, ice, snow, or other foreign materials.
    • When the camera lens becomes fogged or suffers from internal condensation.
    • When the camera is subjected to intense, direct light, such as low-angle sunlight or the glare of high beams from oncoming vehicles.
    • When headlights are dim due to lens opacity, or when driving in darkness or tunnels without sufficient illumination.
    • When there are rapid, drastic fluctuations in ambient lighting, such as entering or exiting tunnels, passing under bridges, or experiencing frequent lightning.
    • When navigating temporary traffic diversions, lane closures, or construction-related lane shifts.
    • When driving on severely uneven or unpaved road surfaces.
    • When negotiating sharp, hairpin curves or excessively winding road layouts.
    • When driving on roads with repetitive, steep vertical inclines and declines.
  • The Steering Assist will not function correctly and should not be used if the vehicle is in a compromised mechanical state:
    • If your Nissan Leaf is fitted with tires that do not meet standard specifications, including tires with excessive wear, improper inflation, or the use of temporary spares, tire chains, or non-approved wheels.
    • When the vehicle has been modified with non-original, aftermarket brake or suspension components that alter its handling characteristics.
    • If the camera's field of view is physically blocked by internal cargo, stickers, or dashboard-mounted accessories.
    • When the vehicle is overloaded with excessive luggage or heavy items in the rear cabin or cargo area, which can disrupt vehicle balance and sensor calibration.
    • When the total payload capacity of your Nissan Leaf is exceeded.
  • Be aware that high levels of ambient cabin or road noise may mask the warning chime, potentially leaving you unaware of a system alert.
  • For the ProPILOT Assist and Steering Assist systems to maintain peak operational reliability, the windshield surface directly in front of the camera unit must be kept pristine.

To maintain this clarity, replace your wiper blades as soon as they show signs of wear. Always utilize the correct size of wiper blades to ensure the entire windshield is swept effectively. We strongly advise using only Genuine NISSAN wiper blades, or high-quality equivalents specifically engineered for your Nissan Leaf model and year, to ensure optimal performance. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified dealer to secure the appropriate parts for your specific vehicle configuration.
