Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Steering Assist temporary standby
Automatic standby due to driving operation:
When you engage the turn signal to initiate a lane change or turn, the Steering Assist system in your Nissan Leaf is temporarily placed into a standby mode to allow for your manual input. The system will seamlessly restart and resume active lane centering assistance once the operating conditions are satisfied again after your maneuver.
Automatic standby:
In specific scenarios, the system will trigger a warning message accompanied by an audible chime, placing the Steering Assist into a temporary standby mode. Rest assured that the system is designed to automatically resume its functions as soon as it detects that the necessary operating parameters have been restored:
- When the lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are no longer effectively detected by the camera.
- When driving at speeds below approximately 37 mph (60 km/h) and the vehicle ahead is no longer detected, causing the system to pause its active centering guidance.
Steering Assist cancel
The Steering Assist function will fully cancel under the following conditions. During these events, the status and system indicators will extinguish, and the "Not Available Bad Weather" warning message will appear on your vehicle information display:
- When the system encounters unusual or ambiguous lane markings, or when it is unable to maintain a clear lock on the lane due to environmental challenges—such as deep snow ruts, intense light reflections during rain, or the presence of multiple, conflicting, or unclear road lines.
- When the windshield wipers are set to high (HI) speed mode; the Steering Assist is intentionally disabled if the high-speed wiping continues for more than approximately 10 seconds to ensure consistent sensor performance.
Action to take:
If the system cancels, you may turn off the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system using the CANCEL switch on your steering wheel. Once the environmental or road conditions that caused the cancellation have cleared, you can simply reactivate the ICC system to restore full functionality to your Nissan Leaf.
Steering Assist malfunction
If the system detects an internal fault or sensor issue, it will automatically deactivate for safety. An orange Steering Assist status warning will illuminate on your dashboard, and an audible chime may sound to grab your attention.
Action to take:
Safely pull over and bring your Nissan Leaf to a complete stop. Shift into the P (Park) position and perform a full power cycle by turning the EV system off and then restarting it. After restarting, resume driving and attempt to re-engage the Intelligent Cruise Control system. If the orange warning light remains illuminated, it indicates a persistent malfunction in the Steering Assist. While your vehicle remains perfectly drivable under standard conditions, we recommend that you have the system professionally inspected at your earliest convenience. Please visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer to have the system properly diagnosed and serviced by expert technicians.
Steering Assist maintenance
The camera sensor responsible for powering these advanced driver-assistance features is mounted securely above the inside rearview mirror.
To preserve the precise operation of the system and prevent the occurrence of false malfunctions, please observe these maintenance best practices:
- Keep the windshield surface clean and free of obstructions, particularly in the area directly in front of the camera unit.
- Avoid placing any stickers, decals, or transparent materials, and do not install any aftermarket accessories near the camera housing.
- Do not place highly reflective items, such as mirrors or sheets of white paper, on the instrument panel. Sun glare reflecting off these objects can significantly impair the camera unit's ability to track lane markers accurately.
- Exercise care not to strike, press, or damage the area surrounding the camera unit. For your safety, do not attempt to touch the camera lens or remove any mounting screws located on the camera assembly.
Should the camera unit of your Nissan Leaf suffer damage, such as from an accidental impact or windshield breakage, we strongly recommend visiting a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for professional repair and system recalibration to ensure all safety features function as designed.
