Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Steering Assist

WARNING

Failure to strictly adhere to these safety warnings and operational guidelines for the Steering Assist system in your Nissan Leaf could lead to a serious accident, personal injury, or death.

  • The Steering Assist feature is intended solely as a driver-assistance aid; it is not a substitute for attentive, manual driving, nor is it designed to compensate for careless, distracted, or fatigued operation. This system will not reliably steer the vehicle to keep it within its lane in every scenario, and it is explicitly not designed to prevent a loss of vehicular control. You remain the primary operator of your Nissan Leaf and bear full responsibility for maintaining situational awareness, keeping the vehicle safely within its lane, and retaining absolute control at all times.
  • Recognize that the Steering Assist has defined performance limitations and should never be relied upon as your sole means of guidance. The system is incapable of functioning across all possible traffic, meteorological, road, and infrastructure conditions. You must always drive defensively, remain fully engaged with the vehicle's operation, and be prepared to take immediate manual control to steer appropriately.
  • Steering Assist is engineered for use exclusively on well-maintained, high-speed freeways or highways featuring moderate, gentle curves. To mitigate the risk of an accident, you must never engage this system on local roads, residential streets, or non-highway infrastructure.
  • The system operates by providing steering inputs to help keep your Nissan Leaf centered within its lane; it is not programmed to autonomously detect and avoid stationary obstacles, debris, or other vehicles that may suddenly merge into your path.
  • It is your fundamental duty as the driver to stay alert, drive defensively, and keep your vehicle properly positioned in its lane. Never remove your hands from the steering wheel while driving. For the continued safety of you and your passengers, keep your hands on the wheel and maintain active control of your Nissan Leaf at all times.
  • Always exercise heightened care and vigilance when the Steering Assist is active. We strongly urge you to read and understand the Owner's Manual in its entirety before utilizing this feature. To avoid catastrophic injury, never rely on the system to prevent accidents or manage your speed during emergency maneuvers. Use the Steering Assist only when environmental, road, and traffic conditions are suitable for its operation.

Steering Assist operation

The Steering Assist function actively manages the steering system of your Nissan Leaf to help maintain your vehicle's position near the center of the lane during your drive. This feature operates in conjunction with the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system. For comprehensive details on their combined functionality, please refer to the section titled "Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) (with ProPILOT Assist)."

The Steering Assist can be engaged only when all of the following conditions are met:

  • The Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system is currently active and controlling your speed.
  • The system clearly detects lane markers on both the left and right sides of your Nissan Leaf.
  • A lead vehicle is successfully detected by the system (required when traveling at speeds below 37 mph [60 km/h]).
  • The driver is actively gripping the steering wheel.
  • The vehicle is positioned near the center of its travel lane.
  • The turn signals are deactivated.
  • The windshield wipers are not set to high (HI) speed operation (note: if you engage the wipers at high speed, the steering assist function will be disabled approximately 10 seconds thereafter).
