Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : NISSAN Intelligent Key system
WARNING
- The radio frequency signals emitted by this keyless access system could potentially interfere with the proper function of active electromedical devices. Individuals equipped with an implanted cardiac pacemaker or similar medical equipment should consult directly with their device manufacturer to evaluate potential electromagnetic interactions before operating the system.
- The specialized Intelligent Key actively transmits radio waves whenever its integrated command buttons are pressed.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), these wireless signals may cause unwanted interference with aircraft communication and navigation arrays. Consequently, you must not press the buttons or otherwise operate the Intelligent Key transmitter while on board an airplane.
Additionally, take precautions to store the remote fob securely in your luggage or pocket to guarantee that the buttons are not accidentally compressed or operated unintentionally during a flight.
- Never leave the primary Intelligent Key inside the passenger compartment or cargo area when exiting and leaving your vehicle unattended.
The innovative NISSAN Intelligent Key system allows you to effortlessly manage all door locks and the rear hatch lock cylinder. You can utilize the standard long-range remote control buttons or simply press the physical request switch on the exterior door handle of your Nissan Leaf without ever removing the transmitter from your pocket, backpack, or purse. Please note that the surrounding electromagnetic environment and localized weather conditions may directly affect the responsiveness of the keyless entry loop.
Be sure to thoroughly read and understand the following operational guidelines before utilizing this keyless access configuration.
CAUTION
Always ensure that you physically carry the registered Intelligent Key with you on your person whenever you are operating or riding in the vehicle.
The remote fob relies on a continuous feedback loop capable of receiving and transmitting low-power radio frequencies. The integrated Intelligent Key system transmits these weak radio waves across various short-range distances. Specific environmental conditions can cause signal degradation or temporarily interfere with the seamless operation of your Nissan Leaf keyless link under the following scenarios:
- When operating the vehicle in close proximity to major broadcast infrastructure that generates strong radio frequencies, such as a television transmitter tower, high-voltage power station, or cellular broadcasting facility.
- When you are carrying or operating other portable wireless communication equipment simultaneously, such as a cellular telephone, two-way transceiver, or a mobile CB radio.
- When the physical Intelligent Key housing is in direct contact with or heavily shielded by metallic materials, foils, or conductive cases.
- When another type of radio frequency remote control device or garage door opener is being operated in the immediate vicinity.
- When the transmitter fob is placed too close to household or office electronic appliances, such as a personal computer, laptop, or wireless router.
- When the vehicle is parked right next to an electronic parking meter or an automated gate barrier system.
In such instances where interference is actively occurring, alter your immediate operating position relative to the vehicle sensors, clear any electronic obstructions, or manually utilize the emergency mechanical key concealed inside the fob body.
Although the actual service life of the internal coin-cell battery varies depending on individual usage patterns and exposure to ambient temperatures, the factory battery life is engineered to last approximately two years under normal conditions.
If the internal cell becomes fully discharged, you should promptly replace it with a fresh, high-quality lithium battery to restore optimal transmitter range.
When the remaining power drops below a critical threshold, a clear "Key Battery Low" warning indicator will automatically illuminate within the central vehicle information display cluster. For additional troubleshooting information and step-by-step guidance, see the "Key Battery Low" reference section.
Because the electronic circuits inside the Intelligent Key are constantly listening for pairing signals, leaving the fob resting near appliances that emit continuous electromagnetic waves—such as television sets, audio monitors, or personal computers—will cause the internal battery to deplete much faster than expected.
For detailed walkthrough instructions regarding this regular maintenance task, see the "NISSAN Intelligent Key battery replacement" portion of this manual.
Always double-check that your vehicle accessories are turned off when parking to ensure that the auxiliary 12-volt vehicle battery is not completely discharged over time.
For expanded convenience, as many as four independent Intelligent Keys can be electronically registered to and operated with a single Nissan Leaf. For detailed information regarding the authorized purchase, coding, and synchronizing of additional keys, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer.
