Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Doors

When the passenger doors are locked using one of the primary manual or electronic security methods, they are completely secured so that they cannot be opened from either the inside or outside door handles. The lock mechanisms must be deliberately placed in the unlocked position before anyone can open the doors.

WARNING

  • Always make sure that all cabin doors are completely locked while the vehicle is in motion. When combined with the proper use of factory seat belts, keeping the doors locked provides a much higher level of protection in the event of a severe accident by helping to prevent occupants from being dangerously ejected from the moving vehicle. This precaution also prevents children and other rear passengers from unintentionally opening the doors while driving, and acts as a barrier to keep out unauthorized intruders during stops.
  • Before pushing open any vehicle door to exit, always check your mirrors to carefully look for and avoid oncoming traffic, cyclists, or pedestrians.
  • To help avoid the catastrophic risk of serious injury or death through the unintended operation of the vehicle and its high-voltage systems—including accidental entrapment in power windows or inadvertent door lock activation—never leave young children, individuals who require the assistance of others, or family pets completely unattended in your vehicle. Additionally, the interior ambient temperature inside a sealed Nissan Leaf cabin on a warm day can escalate dramatically within minutes, creating an extreme environment that poses a significant risk of heatstroke, permanent injury, or death to people and pets.

Locking with key

Driver's side

The integrated power door lock system allows you to effortlessly lock or unlock all vehicle doors simultaneously by using the master key or emergency mechanical key blade inside the driver's exterior door cylinder.

Physically turning the key blade toward the front 1 of the vehicle commands the central locking system to secure all the doors while simultaneously activating the vehicle security alarm system.

Conversely, turning the key blade 1 time toward the rear 2 of the vehicle manually unlocks the driver's door only. From that initial position, returning the key to its vertical neutral 3 position (the only angle where the key blade can be inserted or removed) and turning it toward the rear 4 a second time within 5 seconds will command the system to unlock all remaining passenger doors.

Locking with inside lock knob

To quickly lock any individual door from the inside without using a key, manually move the inside lock knob forward to the lock position 1, then close the door behind you.

To pull open the door from the inside, move the manual inside lock knob backward to the contrast-marked unlock position 2.

Locking with power door lock switch

To secure all cabin entry points simultaneously without using a physical key, simply press the centralized power door lock switch (located on either the driver's or front passenger's armrest) down to the lock position 1. When choosing to lock the vehicle doors using this method, always double-check to be absolutely certain you have not left the primary key transmitter lying inside the vehicle cabin.

To instantly unlock all passenger doors from the interior, press the master door lock switch down toward the designated unlock position 2.

Lockout protection

If any passenger door is currently resting open and the master power door lock switch is deliberately toggled to the lock position, all lock cylinders will engage. However, if the vehicle detects that the primary Intelligent Key has been left behind inside the cabin after all the doors are completely closed, the smart system will automatically unlock all doors immediately and sound an audible warning chime to alert the driver.

These integrated electronic safeguards work in tandem to help prevent your primary Intelligent Key from being accidentally locked inside the vehicle cargo or passenger areas.

Automatic door locks

  • For enhanced security on the road, all doors are programmed to lock automatically the moment the vehicle speed reaches 15 mph (24 km/h).
  • All doors will then automatically unlock the moment the main vehicle power switch is pressed and placed in the OFF position.

Child safety rear door lock

Integrated child safety locks are built into the rear doors to help prevent passengers, particularly small children sitting in the back row, from accidentally opening the doors while your Nissan Leaf is in motion.

The mechanical child safety lock levers are easily accessible on the inner edge of both rear doors when they are open.

When this safety lever is slid down into the normal unlock position 2, the latch operates standardly and the door can be opened freely from either the exterior handle or the interior handle.

When the safety lever is pushed up into the LOCK position 1, the interior handle mechanism is isolated, meaning the door can be opened exclusively from the outside handle.
