Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Forward-facing child restraint installation using LATCH
A critical safety limitation applies to the LATCH system: do not utilize the lower anchors if the combined weight of the child and the child restraint exceeds 65 lbs. (29.5 kg). If the total weight surpasses this limit, you must secure the child restraint using the vehicle's standard seat belt system rather than the lower anchors. In all cases, please strictly adhere to the detailed installation instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer to ensure the highest level of safety within your Nissan Leaf.
Follow these specific steps to correctly install a forward-facing child restraint in your vehicle using the LATCH system:
1. Position the child restraint firmly on the chosen seat.
Ensure that the placement complies with the specific guidelines set forth by the child restraint manufacturer for a forward-facing configuration.

Forward-facing webbing-mounted - step 2
2. Securely connect the child restraint's anchor attachments to the vehicle's LATCH lower anchors. Perform a physical check to ensure that each LATCH attachment is fully engaged and properly locked into the anchor points.
If your child restraint is equipped with a top tether strap, you must route it correctly and secure it firmly to the designated tether anchor point. For comprehensive instructions on this process, please refer to the "Installing top tether strap" section.
Please note: never install a child restraint that requires a top tether strap in any seating position that lacks a dedicated top tether anchor point.

Forward-facing rigid-mounted - step 2
3. The rear surface of the child restraint must be positioned so that it sits flush and is secured firmly against the vehicle's seatback.
If the vehicle's head restraint or headrest interferes with the proper fit of the child restraint, you may remove it for the duration of the installation and store it in a secure location. It is imperative that you reinstall the head restraint or headrest immediately once the child restraint is removed from the Nissan Leaf. If a seating position features a non-adjustable head restraint that continues to prevent a proper, stable fit, please attempt to install the seat in a different position or select an alternative child restraint model.

Forward-facing - step 4
4. For child restraints utilizing webbing-mounted attachments, remove any excess slack from the anchor system. To achieve a secure fit, press downward and rearward firmly in the center of the child restraint—using your knee if necessary—to compress the Nissan Leaf seat cushion and seatback while simultaneously tightening the anchor webbing to its maximum tension.
5. Tighten the top tether strap strictly following the manufacturer's provided instructions to eliminate any remaining slack, ensuring the strap is pulled taut.

Forward-facing - step 6
6. After successfully attaching the child restraint, test its stability before placing your child inside. Grasp the restraint firmly near the LATCH attachment path and push it side to side; it should not exhibit more than 1 inch (25 mm) of movement. Additionally, tug the seat forward to confirm that the LATCH attachment holds it securely in place. If the restraint is not adequately stable, tighten the LATCH attachments as needed, or consider trying a different seating position and performing the test again to ensure your child's safety.
If you encounter difficulty achieving a secure fit, you may need to try a different child restraint model. It is important to remember that not all child restraints are compatible with every type of vehicle seat architecture.
7. Always perform a thorough safety check to confirm that the child restraint is properly secured before every trip. If you detect that the restraint is loose or shifts easily, you must repeat steps 1 through 6 to ensure the installation is firm and correct.

Installing top tether strap
The top tether strap is an essential safety component and must be utilized whenever you are installing a child restraint using the LATCH lower anchor attachments in your Nissan Leaf.
Before proceeding with the tether, first ensure the child restraint is securely fastened using the LATCH lower anchors, which are available for the rear bench outboard seating positions.

2. Carefully position the top tether strap 1 as illustrated in the vehicle diagrams.
3. Securely fasten the tether strap to the designated tether anchor point 2, following the visual guidance provided.
4. Consult the relevant child restraint installation procedures outlined earlier in this section to confirm all connections are correct before tightening the tether strap to remove slack.
CENTER SEATING POSITION
1. Remove the head restraint or headrest and keep it in a secure location. You must reinstall the head restraint or headrest as soon as the child restraint is no longer in use.
For more information, please see the "Head restraints/headrests" section of this guide.
2. Position the top tether strap 1 according to the provided installation illustrations.
3. Attach the tether strap firmly to the tether anchor point 2, as shown in the diagram.
4. Review the appropriate child restraint installation steps within this section to verify proper configuration before applying final tension to the tether strap.
If you have any questions or require clarification while installing a top tether strap in your Nissan Leaf, we strongly recommend that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for professional assistance and details.
WARNING
The child restraint anchorages are precision-engineered to withstand only the specific loads imposed by correctly fitted child safety seats.
Under no circumstances should these anchor points be utilized to attach adult seat belts, or any other items, cargo, or equipment to the vehicle. Misuse of these points could damage the child restraint anchorages. If an anchorage point is compromised, the child restraint cannot be installed properly, which could lead to serious injury or death to a child in the event of a collision.
