Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Wiper and washer switch
WARNING
When driving your Nissan Leaf in freezing conditions, please be aware that washer solution can freeze rapidly upon contact with a cold windshield, severely obscuring your view and creating a significant safety hazard. To ensure optimal visibility and prevent accidents, always activate the defroster system to warm the windshield thoroughly before attempting to spray and wash the glass.
CAUTION
- To prevent damage to the washer motor, never operate the washer system continuously for more than 30 seconds at a time.
- Avoid operating the washer if the fluid reservoir is empty, as this can lead to pump failure.
- Never pour full-strength windshield-washer fluid concentrates directly into the reservoir. Certain methyl alcohol-based concentrates are highly aggressive and can cause permanent staining or cosmetic damage to the vehicle's grille and exterior trim if spilled during the refilling process of your Nissan Leaf.
- Always pre-mix washer fluid concentrates with water according to the specific manufacturer's instructions before adding the mixture to the reservoir. Do not attempt to use the vehicle's windshield-washer fluid reservoir as a mixing container for concentrate and water.
NOTE:
In the event that the windshield wiper movement is obstructed by heavy snow or ice buildup, the system is designed to automatically halt wiper operation to prevent potential motor damage. Should this occur, immediately turn the wiper switch to the OFF position and safely remove any snow or ice accumulated on or around the wiper arms. After waiting approximately one minute, you may turn the switch back to your desired setting to resume normal wiper operation.
The windshield wiper and washer system in your Nissan Leaf is fully functional whenever the power switch is in the ON position.
To activate the wipers, push the lever downward to select your preferred speed setting:
- Intermittent - The frequency of the wipe can be precisely adjusted by rotating the knob toward position A (Slower) or position B (Faster). Additionally, for added convenience, the intermittent wiper speed is designed to automatically adapt based on the current speed of your Nissan Leaf.
For example, as the vehicle speed increases, the intermittent wipe intervals will automatically shorten to maintain clear visibility.
- Low - Provides continuous, steady low-speed wiping.
- High - Provides continuous, rapid high-speed wiping.
- MIST - Performs a single, rapid sweep of the wipers for immediate cleaning.
Please note that the Speed Dependent feature may be disabled in certain settings.
Washer operation
To clean your windshield, pull the lever toward the back of the vehicle until the desired amount of washer fluid has been sprayed onto the glass. The wipers will then activate automatically for several cycles to ensure a clear view from your Nissan Leaf.
Drip Wipe Functionality
Shortly after you have finished using the washer system, your Nissan Leaf will automatically perform a single "drip wipe" sweep. This specialized cycle is designed to clear away any remaining washer fluid that may have trickled down, ensuring that your view remains unobstructed without the need for further manual input.
Rear wiper operation
WARNING
When operating your Nissan Leaf in freezing temperatures, please exercise caution as the washer fluid can freeze upon contact with the rear glass, significantly obscuring your rearward visibility and potentially leading to an accident. Always ensure the rear window is sufficiently warmed using the defroster system before activating the rear washer.
CAUTION
- To prevent excessive heat buildup and potential motor failure, do not operate the rear washer system continuously for more than 30 seconds.
- Avoid engaging the washer system if the reservoir is empty, as dry operation can damage the pump components.
- Never fill the reservoir with undiluted washer fluid concentrate. Certain methyl alcohol-based concentrates are highly potent and can cause permanent cosmetic damage or staining to the vehicle's exterior grille and paint if spilled during the filling process.
- Always pre-mix fluid concentrates with water according to the manufacturer's specified ratios before adding the solution to the reservoir. The Nissan Leaf windshield-washer fluid reservoir is not designed to serve as a mixing vessel for concentrates.
NOTE:
Should the rear wiper movement be physically restricted by snow, ice, or other debris, the system will automatically deactivate to protect the wiper motor from damage. If you notice the wiper has stopped, immediately switch it to the OFF position and safely clear all snow and debris from around the wiper arms. After approximately one minute, you may return the switch to the ON position to resume normal operation.
The rear window wiper and washer system is fully operational whenever the power switch of your Nissan Leaf is in the ON position.
To activate the rear wiper, simply rotate the switch clockwise from the OFF position to select your desired mode:
- Intermittent (INT) - Activates the rear wiper in a fixed intermittent cycle (this interval is not adjustable).
- Low (ON) - Activates the rear wiper for continuous, steady operation.
To engage the rear washer, push the switch forward; the wiper will automatically activate for several sweeps to help clean the glass, ensuring the best possible visibility for your Nissan Leaf.
