Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Vehicle security system
The vehicle security system acts as a primary deterrent by triggering powerful visual and audible alarm signals if unauthorized access is attempted through any of the doors or the rear hatch while the system is armed. Please note that this is a perimeter-based protection system; it is not a motion-detection system and will not activate based on vehicle movement or vibrations alone.
While this system is a powerful tool to deter theft, it cannot guarantee complete prevention in all scenarios, nor can it fully protect individual interior or exterior components. We recommend practicing consistent safety habits by securing your Nissan Leaf fully, even if you are only stepping away for a very brief period.
Never leave your Intelligent Key inside the vehicle, and always ensure all doors are locked when leaving the car unattended. Maintain high situational awareness, and whenever possible, park your Nissan Leaf in secure, well-lit, and high-visibility areas.
For owners seeking an additional layer of security, various aftermarket solutions such as component locks, VIN etching, and advanced GPS tracking systems are available at automotive specialty shops. A NISSAN certified LEAF dealer may also offer authorized security accessories. It is also advisable to contact your insurance provider, as many insurers offer premium discounts for vehicles equipped with specific, verified anti-theft protection features.
How to arm the vehicle security system
1. Ensure all windows are completely closed.
Note that the system can still be armed even if a window remains open, though it is best practice to seal the cabin completely.
2. Place the power switch into the LOCK or OFF position and ensure you remove the Intelligent Key from the interior of the vehicle.
3. Close all doors securely. You may lock all doors using any of the following methods:
- The LOCK
button located on your Intelligent Key
- Any exterior door request switch
- The interior power door lock switch
4. Verify that the security indicator light illuminates. This light will remain solid for approximately 30 seconds, indicating that the system is currently in the pre-arm phase.
After this 30-second window, the system automatically transitions into the fully armed phase, at which point the security light will begin flashing once approximately every 3 seconds. If you unlock a door or place the power switch into the ACC or ON position during the initial 30-second pre-arm period, the system will cancel and fail to arm.
The system is designed to activate even if the driver or passengers remain inside the vehicle, provided all doors are locked and the power switch is in the OFF position. When you return and place the power switch to the ACC or ON position, the security system will be automatically released.
Vehicle security system activation
Once armed, the Nissan Leaf security system will trigger the following alarm response if it detects an intrusion:
- The headlights will flash rhythmically and the horn will sound intermittently to attract attention.
- The alarm sequence will run for approximately 50 seconds before automatically silencing. However, if the vehicle continues to be tampered with after the alarm stops, the system will immediately reactivate.
The alarm will be triggered by any of the following events:
- Unlocking a door without using the authorized Intelligent Key or the exterior request switch. (Note: even if the door is opened by manually releasing the interior lock knob, the alarm will still activate.)
- Attempting to open the hood of the vehicle.
How to stop an activated alarm
You can instantly silence the alarm by unlocking a door via the UNLOCK
button on your Intelligent Key, using a door handle request switch, or by placing the power switch into the ACC or ON position.
If you find that the system does not operate according to these procedures, it should be inspected immediately. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for a professional system check.
