Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Starting the EV system
1. Confirm that the electronic parking brake is fully applied and the brake indicator light is illuminated on the dashboard cluster.
2. Ensure and confirm that the vehicle transmission layout is securely locked in the P (Park) position before attempting initialization.
When the push-button power switch is placed in the active ON position, the high-voltage EV system of your Nissan Leaf is specifically engineered not to engage or activate propulsion mechanics unless the electronic shift lever is firmly positioned in either the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position slot.
The registered NISSAN Intelligent Key fob must be carried on your person or remain within the active interior cabin operating range at all times when operating the power switch.
3. Firmly depress and hold down the foot brake pedal, then push and release the dash-mounted power switch once to safely place the high-voltage EV system in the operational READY to drive position.
To transition the vehicle directly into the functional READY to drive position immediately from any accessory state, simply push and release the power switch while simultaneously depressing the foot brake pedal, regardless of the power switch's current background mode. Once initialization is successful, the bright green READY to drive indicator light
located inside the driver's meter display illuminates to confirm that the car is primed for driving.
4. To safely stop and shut down the EV system, come to a complete halt, push the physical P (Park) position switch located directly on the electronic shift lever assembly, and then push the push-button power switch to transition the electrical system into the complete OFF position.
NOTE:
Care should be taken to actively avoid common operational situations that can lead to potential auxiliary 12-volt battery discharge and subsequent stressful no-start conditions, such as:
1. The aftermarket installation or extended standalone use of secondary electronic accessories that constantly consume 12V battery power when the main EV system is not running in READY mode (such as cellular phone chargers, dash cams, external GPS navigators, or portable DVD players left plugged into the accessory ports).
2. Situations where the vehicle is not driven regularly or is only driven over very short distances, which prevents the onboard DC/AC converter from providing a sustained charge cycle to the auxiliary battery pack.
In these specific low-usage cases, your Nissan Leaf auxiliary battery may eventually need to be connected to an external smart trickle charger to maintain proper battery health and prevent component degradation.
