Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Telematics overview (models with Navigation System)

In addition to the Event Data Recorders (EDRs) detailed elsewhere in this Owner's Manual, your Nissan Leaf is equipped with advanced electronic modules. These systems continuously monitor, control, and record data concerning various vehicle operations, including the electric motor, battery health, braking performance, and electrical infrastructure. Furthermore, these modules capture information related to your driving environment, such as idling duration, braking patterns, acceleration, and specific trip data. This system also logs how you interact with your car and its integrated features—such as climate control or headlight usage—alongside diagnostic trouble codes, charging history, vehicle speed, and directional or location-based information.

A portion of this collected data is stored locally within your Nissan Leaf to assist technicians during routine servicing and maintenance. However, other operational and performance data is wirelessly transmitted via a cellular connection through the onboard telematics system. This transmission typically occurs upon starting the vehicle or at periodic intervals, sending encrypted information directly to NISSAN.

NISSAN utilizes this aggregated data for several key purposes, including: providing you with NissanConnect EV & Services (or NissanConnect EV with Services powered by SiriusXM, for which you may refer to the separate "NissanConnect Manual"); conducting thorough troubleshooting; evaluating the overall quality, functionality, and performance of your vehicle; and performing research designed to optimize the performance of current and future electric vehicles, including advancements in long-term battery life. Additionally, this data helps NISSAN offer you new, relevant products or services and ensures compliance with applicable legal requirements. This data may be shared with NISSAN’s parent organizations, subsidiaries, affiliates, successors, or assignees; authorized NISSAN certified LEAF dealers; NISSAN’s marketing partners; your fleet or rental company (if applicable); and specialized third-party service providers, such as cellular networks and data management firms.

State and provincial regulations permit the access and use of data recorded by vehicle systems, provided the vehicle owner consents or follows the terms of a subscription agreement. While you are not obligated to authorize this access, declining to do so may prevent NISSAN from activating the telematics system within your Nissan Leaf. Consequently, certain features dependent on these telematics will not function as designed. This includes, but is not limited to: automatic charging station map updates, remote battery state-of-charge checks, charging completion notifications, remote plug-in reminders, remote charging activation, remote climate control, advanced drive route planning, driving tips to maximize range, detailed driving history, billing simulations, ECO rankings, ECO forest displays, and automated maintenance reminders.

Please note that any additional features developed and introduced by NISSAN in the future may also require telematics data transmission to function correctly.

NissanConnect EV with Services powered by SiriusXM are provided by NISSAN in accordance with a formal subscription services agreement tied to your vehicle, which is necessary for all owners. You can review the full explanation of terms and conditions at the NISSAN Owner's Portal webpage. Furthermore, for safety and compliance, the operator of the Nissan Leaf must tap [OK] on the navigation screen to confirm their assent each time the vehicle is started. If, at any point, you choose to stop your vehicle from transmitting data to NISSAN, you may deactivate your telematics account by canceling the subscription services agreement via the NISSAN Owner's Portal webpage or by calling NISSAN at 1-877-NOGASEV (1-877-664-2738). This service can be reactivated later upon your request by visiting the same website or calling the aforementioned number. Alternatively, you may disable the transmission of certain data categories using the settings found in your navigation system under "Menu," then "NissanConnect EV with Services powered by SiriusXM," and finally "Vehicle Information Sharing with NISSAN." Be aware that toggling "Vehicle Information Sharing with NISSAN" to "Off" will only cease the automatic data sharing that occurs at vehicle start-up; specific categories of data may still be transmitted if you choose to manually access telematics features while inside the vehicle or via remote applications.

Your authorization for the wireless transmission and utilization of vehicle data by NISSAN is requested through a user-friendly interface. Specifically, the Nissan Leaf is equipped with a "pop-up" notification on the navigation system screen that prompts you to provide consent for this data exchange. You will encounter a message similar to the following: "Pursuant to the subscription agreement, your vehicle wirelessly transmits recorded operational data to NISSAN for various purposes, including the functionality of NissanConnect EV with Services powered by SiriusXM, as well as for ongoing product evaluation, research, and development. By selecting [OK], you explicitly consent to the transmission and use of your Nissan Leaf vehicle data. For comprehensive terms and details, please refer to this Owner's Manual or visit the NISSAN Owner's portal webpage." By selecting [OK], you enable your vehicle to transmit data as intended by the telematics system architecture. Conversely, if you select [Decline], your vehicle will not transmit this operational data. Please be aware that in this event, the telematics features mentioned previously—and potentially others—will be unavailable for your use. It is important to note that the core navigation system of your Nissan Leaf will remain fully operational regardless of this choice, and you will retain unrestricted access to your radio and climate control systems.

The advanced telematics features found in the Nissan Leaf are fundamentally dependent on reliable cellular data transmission. In certain geographical areas, cellular coverage may be limited or entirely absent, leading to a temporary loss or interruption of data connectivity; consequently, certain remote features may be intermittently unavailable. Even when you are in regions with generally strong cellular coverage, connectivity can still be influenced by environmental and infrastructural factors, such as high-density urban canyons (tall buildings/apartments), subterranean parking structures, tunnels, or rugged mountainous terrain. It is common for connectivity to be disrupted momentarily; this is normal behavior and does not indicate a malfunction of your Nissan Leaf telematics module. If you experience a loss of connection, simply attempt to operate the system again after a few minutes to allow the connection to restore itself.
