Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Supplemental air bag warning labels
- Supplemental front-impact air bag system warning labels
Supplemental air bag warning light
The supplemental air bag warning light, identified by the icon
located on the instrument panel, serves as a comprehensive monitor for the safety network. It continuously checks the operational status of the Air bag Control Unit (ACU), satellite and crash zone sensors, the occupant classification system, as well as the entire array of front, side, curtain, and knee air bags, alongside the seat belt pretensioner systems found in the Nissan Leaf.
The circuits under constant surveillance include all active air bag modules, the pretensioner mechanisms, and all associated electrical wiring required for system deployment.
When the vehicle power switch is toggled to the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light will automatically illuminate for approximately 7 seconds before turning off. This indicates that the system has successfully completed its self-diagnostic test and is fully operational.
If you observe any of the following conditions, it indicates a potential issue that requires professional attention, as the front, side, curtain, knee, and pretensioner systems may need urgent servicing:
- The supplemental air bag warning light remains lit after the initial 7-second diagnostic phase.
- The supplemental air bag warning light exhibits intermittent flashing.
- The supplemental air bag warning light fails to illuminate entirely upon startup.
Under these specific conditions, the air bag and pretensioner systems may be compromised and fail to operate correctly during an emergency. It is highly recommended that you take your vehicle to the nearest NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for a professional inspection and necessary repairs.
WARNING
If the supplemental air bag warning light is illuminated, it could signal that one or more of the protective systems—including the front, side, curtain, or knee air bags, or the seat belt pretensioners—will not deploy during a collision. To minimize the risk of serious injury to yourself or your passengers, have your Nissan Leaf checked by a certified technician as soon as possible.
Repair and replacement procedure
Please note that all air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners are engineered for a single-use, one-time activation. As a safety measure, the supplemental air bag warning light will stay permanently illuminated after an inflation event has occurred, unless there is further damage to the indicator system itself.
Following any deployment, these safety components must be repaired and replaced immediately. We recommend scheduling an appointment with a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer to ensure all work is completed to factory standards.
Whenever maintenance is performed on the vehicle, clearly point out the location of the air bags, pretensioners, and related sensor parts to the technician. Always ensure the vehicle power switch is in the LOCK position when work is being conducted under the hood or inside the cabin.
WARNING
- Once an air bag has deployed, that specific module is expended and must be replaced; it cannot be reused.
Similarly, any activated pretensioner must be replaced as part of the system restoration. The air bag modules and pretensioners are not repairable components. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for this mandatory service.
- The entire suite of front, side, curtain, and knee air bag systems, along with the pretensioner systems, should undergo a professional inspection if there is any evidence of structural damage to the front or side portions of the Nissan Leaf. We recommend visiting a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for this evaluation.
- If the vehicle is being scrapped or if you need to dispose of any supplemental air bag or pretensioner components, please utilize the services of a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer. Correct disposal procedures, which are detailed in the official NISSAN Service Manual, must be strictly followed to prevent personal injury.
- If your vehicle sustains an impact from any direction, the Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) must be inspected. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer to verify that the OCS remains fully functional.
The OCS must be checked even if no air bags deployed during the incident. Failure to ensure that the OCS is functioning correctly may result in improper air bag deployment in future events, which could lead to severe injury or fatality.
