Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Power steering system
WARNING
- If the READY to drive indicator light is off while the vehicle is in motion, the electric power assist for the steering will not be active, making the steering wheel significantly heavier and harder to operate.
- If the power steering warning light illuminates while you are driving and the READY to drive indicator light is on, the power assist feature will cease operation.
While you will maintain full physical control of the vehicle, you must be prepared for the fact that steering will require substantially more physical effort.
The power steering system in the Nissan Leaf is engineered to provide electronic assistance, ensuring that you can maneuver the steering wheel with minimal effort during normal driving conditions.
When the steering wheel is subjected to repeated or continuous aggressive inputs—such as during complex parking maneuvers or driving at extremely low speeds—the system may temporarily reduce power assist. This is a protective safety feature designed to prevent the power steering system from overheating and to ensure its long-term reliability. When this thermal protection is active, you will notice that steering becomes heavier; once the system's temperature stabilizes and cools, the power assist will automatically return to normal operation.
To maintain the health of your Nissan Leaf steering components, try to avoid excessively repetitive, high-stress steering maneuvers. Additionally, you may occasionally hear a mechanical sound when the steering wheel is operated rapidly; please note that this is a normal characteristic of the system and not a malfunction.
If the power steering warning light
illuminates while the READY to drive light is active, it indicates that the system may not be functioning correctly and requires professional attention. We recommend that you have the system checked by a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer as soon as possible.
Should the power assist for steering stop operating, you will retain full control of the Nissan Leaf, but you must be prepared to exert greater force on the steering wheel, particularly when executing sharp turns or driving at low speeds.
