Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Precautions on SRS

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) integrated into your Nissan Leaf is engineered to provide an advanced layer of protection. This section details essential operational information concerning the following safety technologies designed to safeguard occupants:

  • Driver and front passenger supplemental front-impact air bag (NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System)
  • Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag
  • Rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag
  • Driver and front passenger supplemental knee air bag
  • Seat belt with pretensioner(s) (front seat and rear outboard seats)

Supplemental front-impact air bag system

The Nissan Leaf utilizes the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, which is designed to help cushion impact forces to the head and chest regions of the driver and front passenger during specific frontal collision scenarios.

Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag system

Engineered to bolster safety during side-impact events, this system helps cushion the chest and pelvic areas of front-row occupants. These side air bags are configured to inflate specifically on the side of the vehicle subjected to the impact.

Rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag system

To provide consistent protection, this system extends safety coverage to the rear outboard passengers. In the event of a side-impact collision, these air bags are designed to deploy on the affected side to help cushion the chest area of those passengers.

Roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag system

This comprehensive curtain system is designed to provide head protection for occupants in both the front and rear outboard seating positions. During a side impact, these curtains inflate on the impacted side. Additionally, in the event of a rollover, the system is designed to deploy and remain inflated for a short duration to offer extended occupant protection.

Driver and front passenger supplemental knee air bags

These specialized air bags are designed to cushion the driver's and front passenger's knees during certain types of collisions, mitigating impact force in the lower cabin area.

The SRS is intended to supplement the primary crash protection offered by the seat belts in your Nissan Leaf. It is not a substitute for them. For maximum safety, seat belts must always be worn correctly, and occupants should maintain a suitable distance from the steering wheel, instrument panel, and door finishers to allow for proper air bag deployment.

The supplemental air bags are operational only when the power switch is set to the ON position.

Once the power switch is toggled to the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light will illuminate as part of the system's self-check. This light should extinguish after approximately 7 seconds, confirming that the system is fully operational.

WARNING

  • Front air bags are generally not designed to inflate during side impacts, rear impacts, rollovers, or lower-severity frontal collisions. Consistently wearing your seat belt is vital to reducing the risk or severity of injury in all accident types.
  • The front passenger air bag and knee air bag are deactivated and will not inflate if the passenger air bag status light is illuminated.
  • Seat belts and front air bags offer the highest level of protection when occupants are seated upright and well back in their seats with both feet on the floor. Front air bags deploy with significant force; therefore, even with the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, being unrestrained, leaning forward, sitting sideways, or being otherwise out of position dramatically increases the risk of serious injury or death. Being in direct contact with an air bag at the moment of inflation can cause fatal injuries.

Always keep your back against the seatback and maintain as much distance as practical from the steering wheel or instrument panel. Always utilize your seat belts properly.

  • The seat belt buckles for the driver and front passenger feature sensors to detect usage. The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System analyzes collision severity and belt usage to determine the necessary air bag inflation. Failing to wear your seat belt significantly increases injury risks.
  • The front passenger seat includes an occupant classification (weight) sensor that may deactivate the front passenger air bags under certain conditions. This sensor is specific to that seat. Maintaining a correct, upright seated position while buckled is essential for safety.
  • Keep your hands on the outer rim of the steering wheel. Placing them inside the wheel rim risks injury should the air bag deploy.

WARNING

  • Never allow children to ride unrestrained or permit them to extend hands or faces out of the vehicle windows. Holding children in your lap or arms is extremely dangerous. Refer to the provided illustrations for examples of hazardous seating positions.
  • Children are at high risk of severe injury or death from inflating air bags if they are not properly restrained. Whenever possible, pre-teens and children should be secured in the rear seat.
  • Even with the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat, as an inflating air bag poses a lethal risk to the child.

WARNING

Regarding side-impact and roof-mounted curtain air bags:

  • These air bags generally do not inflate during frontal or rear impacts, or low-severity side collisions. Always wear seat belts to mitigate injury risks.
  • Safety systems are most effective when occupants remain upright and well back in their seats. Because side and curtain air bags deploy with great force, no one should place hands, legs, or faces near the side of the seatback or the roof rails. Prohibit occupants from extending limbs out of windows or leaning against doors.
  • Rear-seat occupants must never hold onto the front seatback, as this puts them at risk of severe injury during side air bag deployment. Pay special attention to ensuring children are always properly restrained.
  • Do not use aftermarket seat covers on the front or rear seatbacks, as they can obstruct proper side air bag inflation.
