Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : If the Li-ion battery becomes completely discharged

Should the power limitation indicator light Power limitation indicator light on the Nissan Leaf dashboard illuminate while you are driving your Nissan Leaf, be aware that the system has restricted the output of the traction motor. This is an intentional safety feature designed to preserve remaining energy, and you will notice a corresponding reduction in your vehicle's maximum speed.

If this light appears, it is critical that you navigate to a safe location and pull over immediately before the Li-ion battery reaches a state of total discharge. Once the energy is fully depleted, the vehicle will lose all motive power. In this scenario, contact your local Roadside Assistance provider for help; you can find specific service details in your NISSAN Warranty Information Booklet.

While waiting for professional assistance, we recommend switching the power to the OFF position. This simple step helps to minimize unnecessary drain on the 12-volt battery, preserving its charge for essential vehicle systems.

NOTE:

In the event that the Li-ion battery in your Nissan Leaf becomes completely discharged, the following vehicle behaviors will occur:

  • The vehicle system will automatically engage the ON position, but it will be impossible to transition the vehicle into the READY to drive position.
  • The transmission will be automatically shifted into the N (Neutral) position, rendering the vehicle unable to move under its own power.

WARNING

If your Nissan Leaf is in the N (Neutral) position and both the high-voltage Li-ion battery and the 12-volt auxiliary battery are fully depleted, it will be impossible to shift the vehicle into the P (Park) position. If you find yourself in this situation, you must immediately secure the vehicle by placing sturdy wheel chocks or suitable blocks at the front and back of at least one wheel. Failure to properly immobilize the vehicle can lead to unexpected rolling, which poses a severe risk of death or serious personal injury.

To restore the functionality of your Nissan Leaf and return it to the READY to drive position, you must connect it to a charging source. Continue the charging process until the estimated driving range indicator on the instrument cluster shifts from "---" to displaying a clear, numeric distance value.

NOTE:

  • You may feel a slight, temporary vibration as the vehicle comes to a stop if the Li-ion battery is nearing a complete discharge state. Please note that this is a normal characteristic of the system architecture and does not indicate a malfunction.
  • Should the Li-ion battery reach a zero-charge state, you are required to continue charging until the low battery charge warning light transitions from yellow (on) to off (white).

Push starting

Under no circumstances should you attempt to start the electrical system by pushing the Nissan Leaf.

CAUTION

An electric vehicle is fundamentally different from a combustion engine vehicle and cannot be push-started or tow-started under any conditions. Attempting such maneuvers is ineffective and can result in severe, irreparable damage to the vehicle's traction motor and drivetrain components.
