Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Avoiding collision and rollover

WARNING

Failure to operate this vehicle in a safe, alert, and prudent manner significantly increases the risk of a dangerous situation and may result in an immediate loss of control or a severe accident.

Be alert, anticipate potential hazards, and drive defensively at all times behind the wheel.

Strictly obey all local traffic regulations and speed limits. Avoid excessive speed, high-speed cornering maneuvers, or sudden, jerky steering inputs because these erratic driving practices could cause you to lose operational control of your vehicle, compromising the stability of the chassis.

As with any vehicle on the road, a sudden loss of control could directly result in a severe collision with other nearby vehicles or stationary roadside objects, or cause the vehicle to roll over entirely. This danger is particularly high if the loss of control causes the vehicle to slide sideways across the asphalt or onto a soft shoulder.

Be highly attentive to your surroundings at all times, and consciously avoid driving your Nissan Leaf when tired or fatigued. Never operate the vehicle when under the active influence of alcohol or drugs, including specific prescription or over-the-counter medications which explicitly list drowsiness or slowed reflexes as side effects. Always wear your factory three-point seat belt exactly as outlined in the dedicated "Seat belts" section, and also explicitly instruct all your passengers to do the same before moving.

Properly fastened seat belts help drastically reduce the risk of severe or fatal injury in both high-impact collisions and complex vehicle rollovers.

In a rollover crash, an unbelted occupant is statistically and significantly more likely to suffer fatal injuries or ejection from the cabin than a person properly wearing a designated seat belt.

Off-road recovery

While driving on narrow or unfamiliar routes, the right side or left side wheels of your Nissan Leaf may unintentionally leave the paved road surface and drop onto the shoulder. If this situation occurs, maintain active control of the vehicle by carefully following the precise technical recovery procedure detailed below.

Please note that this step-by-step procedure is only intended as a general technical guide. The vehicle must always be handled appropriately based on the unique current conditions of the vehicle balance, actual road surface grip, and surrounding traffic density.

1. Remain perfectly calm and do not overreact or jerk the steering wheel in panic.

2. Do not abruptly apply the brakes, as sudden braking on mixed surfaces can upset the vehicle's weight distribution.

3. Maintain a firm, secure grip on the steering wheel with both hands at the proper positions and try to hold a straight course parallel to the roadway.

4. When appropriate and safe, slowly release the accelerator pedal to naturally and gradually slow the vehicle down via regenerative braking and friction.

5. If there are no physical obstacles or vehicles directly in your path, gently steer the vehicle to follow the edge of the road while the vehicle speed is steadily reduced. Do not attempt to force or drive the vehicle back onto the main pavement surface until the forward vehicle speed has been safely reduced to a manageable level.

6. When it is completely safe to do so, gradually turn the steering wheel a small amount until both off-road tires smoothly return to the main road surface. Once all four tires are firmly back on the pavement, gently steer the vehicle to stabilize its trajectory and stay in the appropriate driving lane.

  • If you carefully evaluate the situation and decide that it is not safe to return the vehicle to the road surface based on immediate vehicle clearance, harsh road conditions, or heavy traffic conditions, gradually slow the vehicle to a complete stop in a safe, level place completely off the road.

Rapid air pressure loss

A rapid air pressure loss or a sudden tire "blow-out" can occur unexpectedly if the tire is deeply punctured by debris or is structurally damaged due to hitting a sharp curb or a deep pothole. Rapid air pressure loss can also be directly caused by prolonged driving on severely under-inflated tires, which weakens the sidewall.

This rapid air pressure loss can immediately affect the predictable handling, steering feedback, and directional stability of your Nissan Leaf, especially when traveling at high highway speeds.

Help prevent cases of rapid air pressure loss by consistently maintaining the correct factory-recommended air pressure and visually inspecting the tires for uneven tread wear or hidden structural damage. For additional information on tracking parameters, see the "Wheels and tires" technical reference section.

If any tire rapidly loses its air pressure or experiences a complete "blow-out" while driving, maintain firm command of the vehicle by adhering strictly to the emergency stabilization procedure below.

Please note that this safety procedure is only a general guide. The vehicle must always be driven as appropriate based on the dynamic conditions of the vehicle, the road surface, and current traffic patterns.

WARNING

The following abrupt driver actions can severely increase the statistical chance of completely losing control of the vehicle if there is a sudden, unexpected loss of tire air pressure.

Losing control of the vehicle under these circumstances may cause a severe collision and result in serious personal injury or property damage.

  • The vehicle generally moves or pulls heavily in the specific direction of the flat or deflated tire.
  • Do not rapidly or hard apply the brakes, as this can induce a dangerous spin.
  • Do not rapidly or completely release the accelerator pedal all at once, which causes abrupt weight transfer.
  • Do not rapidly or aggressively turn the steering wheel to correct the path.

1. Remain perfectly calm, keep your eyes on the path ahead, and do not overreact to the noise.

2. Maintain a firm, unwavering grip on the steering wheel with both hands to counter the vehicle pull and try to hold a straight course within your lane.

3. When appropriate, slowly and smoothly release the accelerator pedal to gradually decelerate the vehicle without upsetting its balance.

4. Gradually and gently steer the vehicle toward a safe location completely off the active road surface and as far away from moving traffic as possible.

5. Lightly and progressively apply the brake pedal to gradually bring the vehicle to a controlled stop on level ground.

6. Immediately turn on the hazard warning flashers to alert other motorists and contact an authorized roadside emergency service or your local provider to safely change the damaged tire.

Drinking alcohol/drugs and driving

WARNING

Never operate your vehicle while under the active influence of intoxicating alcohol or cognitive-altering drugs. The presence of alcohol in the human bloodstream drastically reduces physical coordination, significantly delays cognitive reaction times, and seriously impairs critical driving judgment.

Driving after drinking alcohol exponentially increases the likelihood of being involved in a severe motor vehicle accident, endangering yourself, your passengers, and all others sharing the road.

Additionally, if you happen to be injured in an unexpected accident, the presence of alcohol in your system can complicate medical treatment and increase the medical severity of the physical injury.

NISSAN is deeply committed to safe driving practices and corporate safety responsibility. However, you as the driver must make the conscious choice never to drive under the influence of alcohol. Every single year, thousands of people are severely injured or killed in completely preventable, alcohol-related accidents globally. Although individual local laws and legal limits vary on what is officially considered to be legally intoxicated, the biological fact is that alcohol affects all human bodies differently and most people significantly underestimate the impairment effects of alcohol even after a single drink.

Remember, drinking and driving simply don't mix! That absolute rule is equally true for drugs of any kind, including over-the-counter medications, legal prescription drugs, and illegal substances. Do not attempt to drive your Nissan Leaf if your cognitive or physical ability to operate your vehicle safely is impaired by alcohol, active medications, or any other temporary physical condition.
