Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Precautions on child restraints
WARNING
- Failure to strictly adhere to the warnings and detailed instructions regarding the proper use and installation of child restraints can result in severe injury or death to a child or other occupants during a collision or emergency braking maneuver:
- Every child restraint must be used and installed exactly as specified. Always consult and follow the comprehensive instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer for both installation and daily use.
- Infants and children should never be held on a passenger's lap while the vehicle is in motion. Even the strongest adult lacks the physical strength to overcome the extreme forces generated in a collision.
- Never attempt to secure a child and another passenger simultaneously using the same seat belt.
- Nissan recommends that all child restraints be installed in the rear seating positions. Extensive safety research indicates that children are better protected when properly restrained in the rear of the vehicle. If circumstances require the installation of a forward-facing child restraint in the front seat, please refer to the specific instructions under "Forward-facing child restraint installation using the seat belts."
- Even when your Nissan Leaf is equipped with the advanced Nissan Advanced Air Bag System, you must never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat. The force of an inflating air bag could cause catastrophic injury or fatality to a child.
A rear-facing child restraint is designed exclusively for installation in the rear seat.
- Always ensure you purchase a child restraint that is verified to be compatible with both your child’s size and the dimensions of your vehicle.
Please note that certain models of child restraints may not be compatible with the seat geometry of your Nissan Leaf.
- The dedicated child restraint anchorages are engineered solely to support the specific loads imposed by correctly fitted child safety seats. Under no circumstances should these points be used to attach adult seat belts, luggage, or any other aftermarket equipment to the vehicle.
Misuse of these anchorages can compromise their integrity. If an anchorage is damaged, it will not hold a child restraint properly, placing a child at significant risk of injury or death in a collision.
- Never use child restraint anchor points to secure items not related to child safety.
- A child restraint equipped with a top tether strap must never be utilized in the front passenger seat.
- Always ensure that the vehicle seatbacks remain in an upright position after the installation of a child restraint.
- Infants and children should consistently be placed in an appropriate child restraint whenever they are in the vehicle.
- When a child restraint is not in use, ensure it is securely held in place using the LATCH system or the vehicle seat belt. During a sudden stop or collision, loose objects can become dangerous projectiles, causing injury to occupants or damage to the interior of your Nissan Leaf.
CAUTION
Child restraints left in a closed vehicle during warm weather can reach temperatures that may cause burns. Always inspect the seating surfaces, harness buckles, and hardware for excessive heat before placing your child into the seat.
Your vehicle is equipped with the universal LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system, designed to simplify the secure installation of child restraints. Many modern restraints feature either rigid or flexible webbing-mounted attachments designed to interface directly with these anchor points.
For in-depth guidance, please consult the section titled "LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system."
If you are using a child restraint that is not LATCH-compatible, you may safely secure it using the standard vehicle seat belts.
There are numerous manufacturers producing child restraints tailored for infants and children of various sizes. When selecting a restraint for your Nissan Leaf, please observe the following guidelines:
- Select only a restraint that displays a certification label confirming compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 or the equivalent Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.
- Verify compatibility by testing the restraint within your Nissan Leaf to ensure it fits securely against the vehicle seat and interacts correctly with the seat belt system.
- Once compatibility is confirmed, place your child in the restraint and check all harness and seat adjustments to ensure the unit is appropriately matched to your child's developmental stage. Always prioritize a restraint designed for your child's current height and weight, adhering strictly to all recommended safety procedures.
- If the total combined weight of the child and the child restraint is less than 65 lbs. (29.5 kg), you may choose to install the seat using either the LATCH anchor system or the vehicle seat belt, but never use both methods simultaneously.
- If the combined weight of the child and the child restraint exceeds 65 lbs. (29.5 kg), you must use the vehicle's seat belt system rather than the lower LATCH anchors for installation.
- Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for the installation and maintenance of your chosen child restraint.
All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories mandate that infants and small children be secured in an approved, compliant child restraint at all times while the vehicle is in operation. Furthermore, Canadian regulations strictly require that the top tether strap on all forward-facing child restraints be secured to the designated anchor point provided in the vehicle.
