Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : NISSAN Intelligent Key

Nissan Leaf Intelligent Key fob system components including mechanical key and key number plate

  1. NISSAN Intelligent Key fob (supplied as two complete sets)
  2. Emergency mechanical key (integrated inside the fob)
  3. Key number plate (one unique metal stamp plate)

Your vehicle is protected by advanced security pairing, meaning it can only be started and driven when using an authentic Intelligent Key that is officially registered to your specific vehicle's electronic Intelligent Key system components and the integrated NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System.

For your convenience, as many as four separate Intelligent Keys can be simultaneously registered to and used with a single vehicle. Any new or replacement fobs must be properly programmed and synchronized by an authorized, NISSAN certified LEAF dealer before they can interface with your vehicle's security module and the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System. Because this synchronization process requires completely clearing the existing memory logs from the car's computer before pairing the new setup, it is crucial that you bring all available Intelligent Keys with you to the NISSAN certified LEAF dealer when requesting programming services.

A unique key number plate is included with your original key set at the time of purchase. It is highly recommended that you record this identification number and store the plate itself in a safe, secure location outside of the vehicle (such as a personal safe or your wallet). If you happen to lose your operational fobs, you should visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer to order exact duplicates generated from this verified code. Please be aware that NISSAN does not maintain a central database of individual customer key numbers, making it critically important that you preserve and keep track of your original key number plate.

Referencing this specific key number is generally only necessary if you have lost all original keys and do not have a working fob available to replicate. If you still have at least one functional key in your possession, a technician can easily duplicate the physical blade and copy the transponder chip data without needing the original key number plate.

CAUTION

Always make sure to carry the primary Intelligent Key on your person whenever you are operating or driving your Nissan Leaf. The remote fob is a highly sensitive precision instrument containing a sophisticated, built-in radio frequency transmitter.

To prevent internal damage, electronic malfunction, or premature component failure, please carefully observe the following handling precautions:

  • While the outer casing of the Intelligent Key is designed to be water resistant, excessive exposure to moisture or immersion in liquid can cause permanent damage to the circuit board. If the device does happen to get wet, immediately wipe it with a soft cloth until the surface and seams are completely dry.
  • Handle the device gently; do not bend the housing, drop it onto hard surfaces, or strike it forcefully against other solid objects.
  • If the ambient outdoor temperature drops below 14ºF (-10ºC), the chemical performance of the internal battery cell may degrade, causing the Intelligent Key to stop functioning or respond sluggishly.
  • Avoid leaving the transmitter exposed for extended periods to extreme heat environments where temperatures exceed 140ºF (60ºC), such as directly on the dashboard during summer weather.
  • Do not attempt to modify, alter, or change the structural housing or internal electronic configuration of the key mechanism.
  • Avoid using magnetic key holders or keeping the fob near strong magnetic bases, as this can disrupt the internal transponder code.
  • Do not place or store the transmitter in close proximity to high-frequency electric appliances, including television sets, personal computers, laptops, tablets, or cellular phones.
  • Never let the electronic assembly come into direct contact with salt water or corrosive fluids, and take care never to leave it in clothing that is placed into a washing machine, as this will severely compromise system functionality.

In the unfortunate event that an Intelligent Key is lost or stolen, NISSAN strongly recommends having an authorized technician erase the electronic ID code of that specific key from the vehicle's memory. Taking this immediate precaution will effectively prevent unauthorized individuals from using that lost fob to unlock or drive your Nissan Leaf.

For detailed technical guidance regarding the secure memory erasure and reprogramming procedure, please reach out to or visit a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer.

Removing the hidden emergency mechanical key from the back of the Nissan Leaf key fob

Mechanical key

An emergency mechanical key is cleverly concealed directly inside the main body of the Intelligent Key housing.

To slide out the mechanical key blade for manual use, simply release the spring-loaded slide lock knob located on the reverse side of the key fob and pull the key base outward.

To re-install the blade after use, firmly insert the metal key back into the slot until the locking mechanism clicks shut and the release knob snaps back into its flush, locked position.

This traditional mechanical key can be used to manually lock or unlock the driver's door lock cylinder if the vehicle battery or key fob power runs out.

CAUTION

For emergency readiness, ensure that you always keep the mechanical key securely installed inside its designated slot within the main Intelligent Key body at all times.
