Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Hood

Step-by-step mechanical diagram for unlatching, raising, and supporting the Nissan Leaf front hood assembly

  1. Before attempting to unlatch the front compartment, ensure that you securely close the outer charge port lid and disconnect any charging cables.
  2. Firmly pull the mechanical hood lock release handle 1 located conveniently below the driver's side instrument panel trim until the primary latch disengages and the hood springs up slightly.
  3. Reach into the emerging gap, locate the secondary safety lever 2 positioned between the hood panel and the charge port lid housing, and push the lever upward with your fingertips to release the catch.
  4. Carefully raise the structural hood 3 until it is open far enough to deploy the safety hardware.
  5. Unclip the rigid support rod 4 from its storage retainer under the hood lining and insert the free end securely into the designated alignment slot 5.

Hold the insulated, coated parts when removing or resetting the structural support rod A. Avoid any direct, unprotected skin contact with the bare metal parts, as they may become extremely hot immediately after the electric motor and power electronics have been stopped.

When closing the front hood assembly, carefully lift the panel to release pressure, return the support rod to its original secure storage clip, lower the hood panel down to approximately 8 inches (20 cm) above the primary receiver latch, and release it to drop under its own weight. This free-fall distance allows proper slam-engagement of the heavy-duty hood latch mechanism without denting the metal surface.

WARNING

  • Always visually and physically make sure the hood is completely closed and safely double-latched before driving on public roads.

Failure to do so could cause aerodynamic forces to force the hood to fly open while in motion, completely obstructing your forward visibility and resulting in a severe vehicle accident.

  • If you observe steam, vapor, or smoke coming from the front motor compartment, to avoid severe personal injury or thermal burns, do not open the hood or approach the front of the vehicle until the emissions have completely subsided.
