Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Road accident precautions

WARNING

In the event of a vehicular collision, please follow these safety protocols:

  • If your Nissan Leaf remains drivable, maneuver the vehicle to a secure location away from active traffic. Once stopped, engage the Park (P) position, apply the parking brake firmly, and power off the EV system completely.
  • Carefully inspect your vehicle for signs of damaged or exposed high-voltage wiring and components.

Refer to the "High-voltage components" section above for a map of these areas. To prevent life-threatening electrical shock, never attempt to touch or move any high-voltage wiring, connectors, or main components, such as the inverter unit or the Li-ion battery pack. If you can see exposed internal wiring from either inside or outside the vehicle, maintain a safe distance and do not make contact under any circumstances.

  • If the vehicle sustains a forceful impact to the undercarriage while in motion, bring the Nissan Leaf to a safe stop immediately and visually verify the condition of the floor and battery area.
  • Be aware that damage or ruptures to the Li-ion battery pack may initiate a fire. If you observe any evidence of battery damage or fluid leakage, contact emergency services without delay. The leaking fluid may contain lithium manganate from the battery; avoid all contact with this substance, whether it is inside or outside the vehicle.

Should any fluid make contact with your skin or eyes, irrigate the area immediately with a generous volume of fresh water and seek professional medical assistance right away to mitigate the risk of serious chemical or electrical injury.

  • If a fire erupts in your EV, vacate the vehicle immediately. Only use fire extinguishers classified as type ABC, BC, or C, which are specifically formulated for use on electrical fires. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire with a small amount of water or an incorrect extinguisher type, as doing so can trigger a dangerous electrical discharge, leading to severe injury or death.
  • If your Nissan Leaf requires towing, it must be performed with the front wheels raised off the ground. Allowing the front wheels to rotate while the vehicle is on the ground can cause the traction motor to generate electricity back into the system, potentially damaging critical EV components or initiating a fire hazard.
  • If you are unable to perform a safe assessment due to the severity of the damage, do not touch the vehicle. Move to a safe distance and alert emergency services.

When speaking with first responders, clearly advise them that this is an electric vehicle so they can implement appropriate safety procedures.

  • Should your vehicle require bodywork or painting after an accident, the Li-ion battery pack, inverter, and associated high-voltage wire harnesses must be removed by professionals before the vehicle enters a paint booth. We strongly recommend using a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for this service, as exposing the Li-ion battery pack to the high temperatures within a standard paint curing booth will cause permanent loss of battery capacity.

Furthermore, damaged battery packs pose severe safety risks to mechanics and repair personnel who are not specifically trained in high-voltage EV handling.

Emergency shut-off system

The Nissan Leaf is engineered with an emergency shut-off system that automatically terminates the high-voltage circuit under the following conditions:

  • Severe front or side collisions where the airbag system has been deployed.
  • Specific types of high-impact rear-end collisions.
  • Detection of critical malfunctions within the EV system.

In these scenarios, the "READY to drive" indicator light will extinguish. For more information regarding these alerts, please consult the "Warning lights, indicator lights and audible reminders" section of your manual.

This automated shut-off is a vital safety feature designed to mitigate the risk of further injury or secondary accidents following a collision.

If the emergency shut-off system has triggered, you may find that the vehicle will not enter the "READY to drive" state. It is highly recommended that you have the Nissan Leaf transported to a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for professional assessment. Even if the system allows you to toggle the power switch to "READY," please be aware that it may shut down abruptly without warning. Therefore, if you must drive to the nearest service center, do so with extreme caution, though it is always safest to have the vehicle towed to a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer for comprehensive service.
