Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Li-ion battery life

Like all energy storage systems, the Li-ion battery in your Nissan Leaf will naturally experience a gradual decrease in its total capacity over time and with consistent usage. This manifests as a subtle reduction in your maximum driving range compared to when the vehicle was brand new. Please understand that this gradual degradation is a normal, expected characteristic of Li-ion technology and does not indicate any malfunction or failure within your Nissan Leaf or its battery assembly.

The rate at which the Li-ion battery's capacity evolves is influenced by numerous factors, including your specific driving habits, vehicle storage conditions, your chosen charging methodology, and the internal temperature of the battery pack during both vehicle operation and the charging process.

To help maximize the useful lifespan and maintain the health of your battery, we recommend adopting the following driving and charging practices:

  • Minimize the exposure of your Nissan Leaf to extreme ambient temperatures for extended durations.
  • Avoid storing the vehicle in environments where temperatures drop below −13ºF (−25ºC) for periods exceeding seven days.
  • Prevent leaving the vehicle idle for more than 14 days when the Li-ion battery available charge gauge is at or near a zero state of charge.
  • Whenever possible, allow the vehicle and battery pack a brief period to cool down after intense driving before initiating a charge cycle.
  • Park and store your Nissan Leaf in cool, shaded locations, keeping it away from direct sunlight and external heat sources.
  • Avoid sustained high battery temperatures, which can be caused by prolonged exposure to extreme heat or by extended highway travel involving multiple back-to-back quick-charging sessions.
  • Prioritize the use of standard "normal" or trickle charging methods for your daily routine, minimizing reliance on public Fast Charge or Quick Charger infrastructure.
  • Practice moderate driving habits by avoiding aggressive acceleration.
  • Utilize ECO mode whenever practical to optimize energy consumption.
  • Do not repeatedly operate the charging timer while the charge connector remains plugged in after a full charge cycle has concluded; this practice can lead to the discharge of the vehicle's 12-volt battery.
  • Regularly monitor the energy levels of your Nissan Leaf by referencing the Li-ion battery available charge gauge.

Li-ion battery maintenance

Beyond standard vehicle care, the Nissan Leaf requires specific, dedicated inspections of the Li-ion battery system to ensure continued safety and performance.

  • For comprehensive details regarding your coverage, please review the NISSAN Warranty Information Booklet. Failure to complete mandatory inspections, repairs, or necessary adjustments may result in significant limitations, exclusions, or the potential voiding of your vehicle’s warranty.
  • For a thorough explanation of the required battery inspection procedures and recommended maintenance intervals, please refer to the "EV maintenance schedules (EM57 electric motor)" section.
