Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Li-ion battery

WARNING

Your Nissan Leaf is equipped with a high-voltage, sealed lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Improper handling, disposal, or tampering with this battery poses significant risks, including severe electrical shock, thermal burns, and life-threatening injury. Additionally, unauthorized disposal can cause irreversible environmental contamination.

CAUTION

To maintain the longevity, safety, and performance of your Nissan Leaf Li-ion battery, please adhere to these guidelines:

  • Avoid exposing the vehicle to extreme ambient temperatures for extended durations, as this may impact battery chemistry.
  • Do not store the vehicle in temperatures below −13ºF (−25ºC) for a period exceeding seven consecutive days.
  • Ensure the vehicle is not left inactive for more than 14 days when the Li-ion battery available charge gauge indicates a zero or near-zero charge level.
  • The high-voltage Li-ion battery is designed exclusively for vehicle propulsion and integrated systems; do not attempt to use it for any other external purpose.

NOTE:

  • If ambient temperatures drop to −13ºF (−25ºC) or below, the Li-ion battery may freeze. In this state, it will be unable to charge or provide the power necessary to operate the vehicle. To restore function, relocate the Nissan Leaf to a warmer environment.
  • Like all lithium-ion technology, the capacity of your battery to hold a charge will naturally diminish over time and through repeated use. This gradual reduction in total energy capacity and the resulting decrease from the vehicle's original mileage range is a normal, expected part of the battery’s lifecycle and does not represent a defect.
  • The Li-ion battery has a finite service life. When its ability to hold a charge falls below factory-defined safety thresholds, the EV system warning light will illuminate. If this occurs, please bring your vehicle to an authorized service center for a professional inspection and potential battery replacement.
  • For all matters regarding the recycling or responsible disposal of the Li-ion battery, we strongly recommend consulting a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer. Do not attempt to handle, recycle, or dispose of the battery yourself under any circumstances.
