Nissan Leaf 2018-2025 (ZE1) Owner's Manual : Cleaning exterior
To preserve the pristine condition and long-term value of your vehicle, proactive maintenance and dedicated care are essential. Regular attention to the exterior not only maintains the visual appeal of your Nissan Leaf but also prevents environmental pollutants from compromising the integrity of the paint and body components over time.
To provide optimal protection for the clear coat and underlying paint surfaces, we recommend washing your vehicle as soon as you identify the following conditions:
- Following any rainfall, as acidic components in rain can chemically bond with the finish and potentially etch the clear coat if left to dry.
- After driving on coastal or seaside roads, where airborne salt spray can accelerate corrosion on exposed metallic and plastic surfaces.
- When environmental contaminants, such as industrial soot, bird droppings, tree sap, metallic fallout, or insect residue, accumulate on the paint, as these can harden and become significantly harder to remove without damaging the finish.
- When significant layers of road dust, grime, or caked-on mud build up, which can act as abrasives during routine driving or washing.
Whenever possible, we recommend storing or parking your Nissan Leaf inside a temperature-controlled garage or a covered parking structure. This minimizes exposure to harmful UV radiation, precipitation, and airborne debris that can degrade the exterior finish over time.
When it is necessary to park your vehicle outdoors for extended periods, selecting a shaded area is preferable to reduce sun damage. If you utilize a body cover, ensure it is specifically designed for automotive use and that the vehicle surface is relatively clean before application to prevent micro-scratches during installation or removal.
Exercise extreme caution to avoid dragging the cover across the paint surface, as trapped dust particles can act like sandpaper, creating swirl marks.
Washing
Begin the cleaning process by gently rinsing off loose dirt and abrasive grit using a soft, wet sponge and an abundance of clean water. Proceed to wash the vehicle thoroughly using a high-quality, pH-balanced vehicle soap designed for automotive finishes, or a mild, non-abrasive dishwashing liquid mixed with clean, lukewarm water—ensure the water temperature is never hot, as extreme heat can negatively affect cleaning agents and the paint surface.
CAUTION
- Do not direct high-pressure water spray onto the sonar sensors (if equipped) integrated into the bumpers. Direct, high-velocity contact can force water past the seals and damage the sensitive internal electronic components. Additionally, never use pressure washers that generate more than 1,200 psi (8,274 kPa) to clean your vehicle. Excessive pressure can cause clear coat delamination, lift graphics, or strip protective wax layers.
When utilizing a pressure washer, maintain a distance of at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the body panels. Always utilize a wide-angle spray nozzle, keep the wand in constant motion to prevent the concentration of pressure on a single point, and avoid lingering over panel gaps, sensors, or rubber seals.
- Avoid commercial car washes that utilize acidic detergents or harsh chemical additives. Some facilities, particularly brushless automated washes, rely on strong acids to dissolve grime; however, this chemical reaction can cause plastic components to become brittle, crack, or discolor, eventually leading to component failure or a degradation in appearance. Always confirm with the facility management that their cleaning chemicals are pH-neutral and safe for automotive clear coats.
- Never use strong household cleaners, abrasive chemical detergents, gasoline, paint thinners, or solvent-based cleaners, as these will aggressively strip protective waxes and oils from the paint, leading to oxidation and finish dullness.
- Avoid washing your Nissan Leaf in direct, intense sunlight or while the body panels are hot to the touch. Rapid evaporation of water and soap can lead to permanent mineral deposits, "water spots," and streaking that are difficult to remove.
- Refrain from using rough-textured cloths, coarse scrubbing pads, or tight-napped towels that can trap dirt and inflict deep scratches. When addressing caked-on mud or heavy contaminants, use plenty of water to soften the substance before attempting removal to ensure the integrity of the paint surface remains intact.
After the soap application, rinse the entire vehicle meticulously with a steady stream of clean water to ensure all residue is completely removed.
Pay special attention to the interior flanges, door seams, hood edges, and hatch folds, as these areas are notorious for trapping moisture and road salt, which are the primary catalysts for corrosion. These hidden areas should be flushed and cleaned during every wash cycle.
Ensure that the water drain holes located along the lower edges of the doors and the chassis remain clear of debris to allow for proper moisture egress. We also suggest spraying water underneath the vehicle and thoroughly flushing the wheel wells to loosen accumulated dirt and neutralize corrosive road salt deposits.
To achieve a professional finish and prevent water spotting on the paint, use a soft, damp, high-absorbency chamois or a specialized microfiber drying towel to carefully remove excess water from the body panels.
Waxing
Applying a high-quality wax on a regular basis creates a sacrificial barrier that shields the paint from UV rays, industrial fallout, and environmental elements, helping your Nissan Leaf retain its "showroom" appearance for years.
We recommend periodic polishing to remove oxidized paint, embedded contaminants, or built-up wax residue before reapplying a fresh coat, which ensures a smoother, more durable bond for the new wax.
If you are uncertain about which chemical products are compatible with your specific paint finish, a NISSAN certified LEAF dealer can offer expert guidance on selecting premium waxes and sealants.
- Wax your vehicle only after it has been washed thoroughly and the surface is completely dry and cool to the touch. Adhere strictly to the application and removal instructions provided by the wax manufacturer.
- Do not utilize any wax products containing heavy abrasives, aggressive cutting compounds, or chemical cleaners, as these can etch the clear coat and leave the finish looking hazy or dull.
Using machine-operated compound pads or performing aggressive polishing on modern base coat/clear coat paint systems can be counterproductive, potentially dulling the depth of the finish or inducing circular "swirl" marks that are highly visible under direct sunlight.
